King cobra 2018

King Cobra, Krabi province, February 2018

It’s not often that I dedicate an entire page to one species but my first encounter with a wild King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) in Krabi province, southern Thailand was a fantastic experience! Thanks again Vern for sharing your find with me!

I was out in the forest one night recently with Adrian when I had a missed call from Vern. I had no money on my phone to call him back or reply to his message which read ‘check your Facebook messages’. Hours later when I returned home I saw that Vern had caught a subadult King of around 1.5 metres and I headed over to Krabi after a few hours sleep so I could see the snake. It was one of the best photo sessions I have had with a reptile and the King was very co-operative before being released back to the forest. Although I hope to see many more wild King cobras in the future, seeing the first one will always be a special memory for me. I have seen huge Kings at snake shows in Phuket and although they are still the same incredible animals, seeing them in a such a captive environment is not how I want to see these snakes. They are Kings of the forest, not a lifeless glass tank or even a wooden box.

Some of my favourite photos of this snake can be seen below.
