Just a quick post to share some photographs of a Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) from today. I spend a lot of time photographing these owls on my locals moors in the spring and summer when they are breeding but in winter they usually leave for coastal areas and foreign shores. Today this owl was resting in the grass after eating a vole and thanks to Katarína for calling me over to it’s whereabouts and then to Brian who very kindly allowed me to use his 800mm lens to photograph it. Thanks Brian!

Great close-ups Matt. I took a friend to try and find a white Mountain Hare seen off the Halifax – Saddleworth Rd. just before Christmas. No luck with the hare, but we got fabulous views of two Short-eared Owls hunting beside the road in the bright afternoon sunlight. Annie’s camera is better than mine and she got some nice images. Mean to put them on the Calderdale-wildlife blog when I get round to it.
Thanks Steve, there were two short-eared owls around here in December too but they only stayed for a couple of weeks and then moved on. I visit mountain hares quite regularly and know a few good spots so drop me an email and I can point you in the right direction if you want to see them.
